The water shortage in the Colorado River Basin has effects that span beyond the borders of the
United States. As the Colorado River Basin loses its water supply at an alarming rats, it impacts
everyone from Southwest of United States to Northern Mexico. Why is the water level so low?
There are multiple causes for the water shortage, including historic drought conditions and
people pulling too much water from the Colorado River. The Colorado River Compact was
designed in 1922 to assign water rights to those that depend on the Colorado River. However,
the Compact left out key populations including Native Americans and Mexico, though treaties
later reallocated some water rights to Mexico.
The Compact also allocated water rights based on measurements of years with high
precipitation. Now, precipitation levels are low, and the Southwest of the U.S. is in a drought.
Even when the Southwest does receive precipitation, higher levels of evaporation steal the
much-needed water from the Colorado River.
Consequently, the water shortage has led to a huge water crisis. As the Colorado Sun reports,
farmers in Northern Mexico are buying water from each other to continue to grow their crops.
But this is a short-term solution and without real change, both Mexico and the Southwest
United States face a serious crisis.
