France seems an unlikely place for the war about water to happen, but police officers have been dispatched to guard giant reservoirs, mostly in the west of the country, built to supply water to farmers in the region. The summer of 2022 was difficult for French farmers; wildfires and extremely high temperatures were harbingers of what is to come as climate change continues to wreak havoc, not only in Europe, but around the world.
In October, French police officers were attacked by several thousand protestors with fireworks and Molotov cocktails, resulting in 22 seriously wounded gendarmes. Green Party officials in the country criticized excessive police presence, saying that was to blame for the numbers injured. An additional four protesters were hurt.
Protesters object to the environmental impact of the reservoirs, but also to the allocation of water. They fear that large, industrial farms will use the majority of the water, leaving little to local farmers. Court cases have halted use of “megabasins” in some areas of the country. There are plans to stop more from being built by these legal means.
Water availability is becoming a larger issue around the world. IXWater has the means to make unconventional sources of water available to farms of all sizes.
